TotalWar:ThreeKingdoms alsoseesthereturnofherounits,whohavespecializedabilitiesandequipmentandarmour.Heroescanalsobooststatsandprovideproductionbonuses.Forinstance,twoseparatefactionscanformacoalitiontoworktowardacommongoalwithouthavingtoformallyformanalliance.Herocharactersarealsoalignedtooneoffiveelements-water,wood,fire,earth,andmetal.Elementalalignmentscanbeusedtoworkwithoragainstoneanother.Heroescanalsobeusedtoaccessandunlocknewformationtypesforyourarmiesthroughoutthecourseofthecampaign.Meanwhile,theDiplomacyfunctionhasalsobeenheavilyreworked,andnowallowsformoreoptionsandgreaterflexibility.TotalWar:ThreeKingdoms alsoputsanewspinonthefactionsmechanic.Insteadofchoosingafactiontoplayas,playersselectoneofelevenmaincharacters.Playingastheselectedcharacter,playersthenrecruitheroestotheircausetogrowtheirarmies.Theseelevencharactersare:CaoCao,SunJian,LiuBei,MaTeng,LioBiao,ZhangYan,YuanShao,ZhengJiang,KongRong,YuanShu,andGongsunZan.Beyondtheseeleven,DongZhuoisalsoaplayablecharacter,andisunlockedafterdefeatinghisarmies,orafterreachingtheEmperorrank.ThreemorefactionsarealsotobeaddedtothegameaspartofDLC.ThesethreeareGongDu,HeYi,andHuangShao,addedwiththeYellowTurbanRebellionWarlordPack.Thesemaincharactersbelongstodifferentclasses,andpresentuniquebenefitsandweaknesses.ClassescanrangefromStrategist(whichallowsfordebuffsfromgreaterrange),Commanders(whocaneffectivelybuffnearbytroops),andGuardians(whoaretankunitsthatcantakealotofdamage). ThegamealsofeaturesanewUIascomparedtoprevioustitlesintheseries,onethatismoreminimalisticandstrippeddown.TotalWar:ThreeKingdoms alsofeaturestwouniquemodes-“Romance”and“Records”.“Romance”modeisbasedonthenovel RomanceoftheThreeKingdoms, andislessrootedinhistory,withcharactersbeinggiftedwithsupernaturalpowers.“Records”modeisbasedon RecordsoftheThreeKingdoms.
