WhattheTimelinetellsyou Timelinecolorstellthestory.ThethincoloredlinealongthetopoftheTimelineinPremiereProindicateswhat’shappeningunderneathwiththatpartofthesequence.Ifthelineisyellow,thatmeansyourcontentisacceleratedbytheMercuryPlaybackEngine(acombinationofsoftwareandGPUtechnologies).Ifit’sred,PremiereProissolelyusingCPUprocessing,forexampleforanAfterEffectscomposition.Ifthethinlineisgreen,thatmeansthatPreviewshavebeengeneratedforthissectionofyoursequence.  Green,red,andyellowlinesonthetimelineindicatingthestatus HowtocreatePreviews PremiereProrenderssectionsofyoursequencewhenyoucreateaPreview,whichyoucandobychoosingSequence >RenderEffectsIntoOut(orRenderIntoOut).“Renderasyougo”meanscreatingPreviewfiles.Thesetakeamomenttogenerate,sodoitwhenyou’retakingabreakfromediting.Previewscanprovidesmootherplayback,butthere’sanextrapayoffwhenexporting. Usepreviewsforyourexports ChangingPreviewstoMezzaninecodecs Whenusingpreviewsonexport,it’simportanttomakesurethey’rerobustandofhighenoughquality.Bydefault,previewsaredisposablerendersdesignedtogeneratequickly.  Tocreatehighqualitypreviews,openyourSequenceSettingsandchangetheEditingtoCustom.ThenswitchtoanappropriateMezzaninecodec.Bydoingso,thePreviewfilesarenowofhighquality–usableforexport.  Asanexample,ourBestPractices:Createyourownprojecttemplates,hasaseriesofsequencesthataresettoProRes422forPreviews. ThisissimilarinconcepttochoosingtoTranscodeoningest.SeeourBestPractices:Workingwithnativeformats fordetailedinstructionsonsettingupingestworkflows. SmartRenderingofcodecs IfyourPreviewcodecmatchesyouroutputcodec,yourexport timecan shrinkfromminutestoseconds. Generally,whetherornottherearepreviews,whenmediaisexported,itgetsre-compressing.PremiereProandAdobeMediaEncoderdoagreatjobofpreservingimagequality.Bydefault,thesourcefootageandeffectsarecompressedtothefinaloutputcodec,transformingmediaaslittleaspossible. Usinghigh-qualityPreviewsforexport,removestheneedtorecalculatetheencoding,atanegligibleimpactonquality.Thisiskeyinfastturnaroundworkflows.Whenyoucreatehigh-qualityPreviewswiththesamecodecasyouroutputcodec,AdobePremiereProintelligentlyspeedsupyourworkflow:insteadofrecompressingyourmedia,PremiereProcopiesthealreadycomputedPreviewsintotheoutputfile. Technically,Premierehasthecapabilityofdoingthistypeoffilecopywhensourcesareuntouchedandmerelyedited(shortened)andoutputtothesamecodec.AnexamplewouldbeXDCamoriginals,edited(noeffects)andthenoutputtoXDCam.Buttodaythatalmostneverhappens:attheveryleast,everyclipsgetsalittlecolorcorrection.Sinceeveryclipwillgetaneffect–thesourcecodecnolongermatters,aslongasthePreviewfilesandoutputcodecsmatch.  SmartRenderingisavailableforarangeofformats,bothmezzaninecodecsandkeycamerascodecs.Forafulllist,seeSmartrendering. Acceleratingh264/HEVC(H.265)output Highcompatibilitydistributionformats,suchasH.264andHEVC(H.265)workonaverywiderangeofdevicesandplatforms.Theyofferfastuploadtimesinrelationtotheirfilesizeandthat’swhytheyarepreferredcodecsforYouTube,Facebook,Instagram,Vimeo,andothers. Butthatversatilitycomewithacost:time.TheH.264andHEVCareprocessing-intensiveformatswhichplacehighdemandsonyoursystem. PremiereProsupportsIntelQuickSyncVideotechnology,availableinCorei5andCorei7CPUsforhardware-baseddecodingandencodingofH.264andHEVCfiles.Decodingmeanssmootherplayback;encodingmeansfasterexports(SeePremiereProhardwareaccelerationrequirements). TousehardwareencodingforH.264andHEVCfilesduringexport,selectthatoptionintheExportmode.Ifyourhardwaredoesnotsupportit,youwillonlyseeSoftwareEncoding.
