DarthMod TheenemycampaignAIinTotalWargamesisfamouslyinconsistent,withatendencytocheatorbehavebizarrelyinthepresenceofannon-AIcharacter.Inourrecentchatswiththedevelopers,they’veadmittedthedifficultyofcreatingbelievableAIwithouttakingshortcuts(andlookdamnshame-facedwhenwebroughtupthesubjectofAIcheating).DarthModredressesthat,makingapparentlyrationalAIbehaviourinthecampaign,landbattlesorseabattles.It’sthesimplestofmods,butmakesmorethanabackgrounddifference.TheenemyAImakesbetteruseofitsunitsandthesubtlealterationsinmorale,arrowspreadandsoon,reallychangethebattles.Giventhatitalsoincreasesunitsizesanddensities,fightingaDarthModAIisalwaysamorereliablechallenge. TheRightsofMan(TROM)3 TROMisafix-packforShogunII.WhereDarthmodaltersthegeneralAI,TROMfocusesonahundredlittlefixestoimprovetheuserexperience.Firstly,itextendsthecampaignto1640,givingplayersmoretimetoachievetheirobjectives.Itdoeshowever,includesomeAIchanges–specificallytohelpsomeofthefactionsusetheirunitsandterritoriesbetter,butalsochangestotheiragentabilitiesandtoimprovetheuseandvalueofmonkunits. AUM-SHO TheAdditionalUnitsModadds11newtrooptypestoShogunIIaswellasunlockingthefaction-specificunitsforusebyallplayers.Thenewunitsarenotexactlystunning–theymostlylooklikereskinsorvariantsofexistingunits–buttheycertainlydoaddalittlemorelengthandlifetocampaignsandbattles.Ifyouwantmoreunits,trytheRealism+orRadiousmods.Update–AUM-SHOdoesn’tworkanymore,usingRadiouswillgiveyoumostifnotalltheunitsincludedthough. Zen SimilartotheRealism+mod,Zenisatop-levelmodthatoverhaulsthegame.Theashigaru(peasant)unitsareaparticularfocus,havingbeenmadesubstantiallycheaperandhavinglargerunits,toreflecthowcommontheywere,andtheAIhasbeentweakedtoproducelessofthem.Similarly,togiveplayersafightingchance,battleshavebeensloweddownandinitialgarrisonsizesincreases,sothegamedoesn’tdegenerateintoopportunisticwarfareimmediately.Everyclanhasbeengivenauniquefeel,byalteringtheirunitrosters,givingtheunitscorrectJapanesenames,andgivingeachclanasingle,uniqueHerounit.Update–Zenonlyworkswhenit’sinstalledonitsown. Realism+ ThemainShogun2Realismprojecthasfocusedonbalancingthecombatofthegame,withoutlookingatthecampaign.Thisexpansionfocusesmoreonthemainworldview,butalsorejigsthebattlesystembyextendingtheirlength.Italsomakesyoufocusmoreontheunits,bylettingyouseetheirmartialartanimationsandchanginghowtheyadvanceduringthecampaign–forexample,Ashigaruactuallybecomeclosertoprofessionalsoldiersthelongertheysurvive.OntopoftheunitsfromtheAUM-SHO(above),thereareanother30unittypesaddedtothegame,manyofwhicharefaction-specific;otherunitshavehadtheirnameschangedtothetrueJapanesenamesandeventheunit-recruitmentsystemhasbeenrevamped.Onthecampaignside,thechangesaremorefundamental.Bothbuildingsandartshavebeendeeplychanged,factionsaremuchmorelong-lasting,culturalinfluences(Ikko,Buddhist,Catholicallegiances)playacampaignrole,andcashflowisaproblemthroughoutthecampaign.SimilarlytoDarthMod,italsofixestheunrealisticAIbehaviourbyincludingtheuniversalAImod.Becauseitusesseveralothermodsasabase,it’sbestonlyrunalone.Update–Nolongerupdated.
