Intheexamplebelow,wecalculatethePeoriahandicapforthreegolfers.Atthebeginningofthematch, holes3,4,5and16,17,18areselectedforthecalculation. Whileeachplayershotfiveoverparonthesixselectedholes,Stevehadtwotriplebogeysthatonly countedastwostrokes(again,themaximumistwostrokesperholetobeusedinthecalculation).Multiplyingthetotalsbythree giveseachplayertheirhandicaps(15,15,&9).Thesehandicapscanthenbeusedasproxiesforanymatchthat wasplayed. WeheardofagroupoftenfriendswhoholdareunioneveryyearinLasVegas.Duringtheirtriptheyplayaround ofgolfeveryday.Becausemostoftheplayersdonotplayenoughtokeepahandicap,onthefirstday thegroupusesthePeoriasystemtoapproximatehandicapsforthenon-handicapplayers.Thathandicapisthenused forthematchesduringtherestoftheweek.Inaddition,eachfollowingdaytheyadjustthePeoriahandicapsagainusing thatday'sscores. EnsuringFairness ThemostimportantthingtoensurewhenusingthePeoriasystemisthattheholesarechosen impartiallyandwithoutpriorknowledgebytheplayers.Choosingholestobenefitoneplayeroveranother removesthefairnessfromthesystem.Similarly,playerswhoknowwhichholeswillbeusedto calculatetheirhandicapmaythrowthoseholesaway(especiallyinmatchplay).Ifyoutrustyourfellow players,thenyoushouldn'tbeconcerned.But,ifyou'dliketoensurefairness, oneoftheeasiestwaysistodrawnumbersoutofahataftertheround.Thefirstpar3,4,&5 oneachninepulledoutofthehataretheholestobeused.
