EngaginginhostagediplomacysetsadangerousprecedentthatwillputatargetonallCanadiansabroad.SinceMeng’sarrest,thirteenCanadianshavebeendetainedinChina,andMichaelSpavorandMichaelKovrigareisolatedastheprimarytargetsoftheChinesegovernment.IfCanadacompromisesinfavouroftheChinesegovernment,itshowsthatanyhostileforeigncountrycanholdCanadianshostagetothreatenandpressuretheCanadiangovernmentintocompliance.WemustnotaccepttheChinesegovernment’shostage-takingandletitdiminishCanada’sautonomyandstrengthontheinternationalstage. Beijinghasdeliberatelytriedtoalienateitselffromtheinternationalcommunity.In2017,XiJinpingspokeabouthisglobalambitionsandBeijing’sroleto“guidetheinternationalcommunitytojointlybuildamorejustandreasonablynewworldorder.”TheChineseCommunistPartyhasbeenrewritingglobalorderintheirfavour:exportingitsauthoritariancontrolontodemocraticsocieties. Canadamusttakeastrongandprincipledstance,drivingamultilateralapproachtotakeaunitedstanceagainstChina’ssystematichostagediplomacy.Theinternationalcommunityneedstostandtogetherincallingforthereleaseofglobalcitizenswhoareimprisonedforpolitically-drivenreasonsinChina. ItisundeniablethattheChinesegovernmentisholdingforeignnationalshostageaschipstobargainwithdemocraticgovernments.Webelieveintheunityofdemocraticsocietiesandourinternationalallies.Canadamuststandwithourallies,ratherthankneelingbeforeBeijing’sautocracy.Othernationsarelookingtoourexample.
