Andplayersalsodreamofgrowingtheirvillageintoahugecity,atleastinthestoryofthegameSuburbia,wheretheybecomebuildersofmetropolises.Thegamewascreatedin2012and,somewhatsurprisingly,reappearsonthemarketsevenyearslater.Thistime,withthesubtitleCollector’sEdition,withthesamedesignerTedAlspach.HeprepareditforusunderthebannerofthepublisherBézierGames.ThegametravelsaroundEuropeancitiesthankstoEsdeviumGames. Fromthefirstlookatthebox,itisclear,thatthiswillbeadelicacy.Thehighbox,whichismorethantwicetheheightofaclassicgame,ispackedwithcontentsfromthetop.Anditwon’tshrinkinanywaylater,becausetheelegantTrayzplasticbindersareusedtostoreallthecomponents.Thesewillbeusedbyplayersnotonlyduringstorage,butalsoduringthegameitself. Duringthepreparation,however,playersmainlycreatethreepilesofhexagonalplatesintheprescribednumber(accordingtothenumberofparticipants)andputthemtogetherinonelargetower.Thisbuildingisplaced,aswellasthesevenstartingtilesrevealedfromthefirststack,inthebasicplasticstandofthemarket.Nearbyplayerswillprepareanofferofasmanycommongoalsasthereareplayers,aswellasasetoftilefactories,parksandsuburbs.Theindividualparticipantswillnowreceiveonecopyofeachoftheseandattachittotheirneighborhood.Here,everyplayeralsomarksthestartingzeroincomeandonereputationpoint.Atthesametime,thecoloroftheboarddetermines,whichwoodenfigurestheindividualparticipantswillreceive.Everyonewillalsoreceiveinvestmenttokens,chooseoneoftheirsecrettargetsand,aboveall,markhisstartingpopulationonacommonboardofresidents. Intheirturn,playersbuytilesonthemarketforthestatedamount,whichconsistsoftwoparts–basedonthepositionofthetileinthemenu(buildingelementsaregraduallycheaper),butalsothecostdirectlyprintedonthepiece.Instead,youcanbuycheaperordinarybuildingsorbuyatilefromthemarket,butuseitasalake.Inallcases,theplayerattachesthenewtile,sothatitisadjacenttosomeofhisalreadybuiltbuildings.However,theindividualpieceshaveeffects,thatarestartingtotakeeffectatthatmoment,andbydoingso,playerscangainareputation,incomeorotherbenefits,forexample,fromadjacentsquares. Instead,playersmaychoosenottobuyanewlocation,buttoinvestintheirexistinginfrastructure.Thismeans,thattheywillpaythepriceofthepieceagainandforthat,theyareallowedtoplaceoneoftheirinvestmenttokensonit.Thentheywillberewardedintheformofdoublingtheeffectofthepiece,onwhichtheinvestmentlies. However,theycanalwayschooseonlyoneofthesefourdescribedactions.Therestofthemoveisjustaboutadjustingthestatusofaplayer,whogetsmoneybasedontheircurrentincome,populationchangesaccordingtocurrentreputation(peoplemoveorrelocate)andreplenishthesupplyoftilesinthemarket.Thatendstheroundanditistheturnofanotheropponent. Soplayersgraduallygothroughtheofferoftiles.Duringsetupofthelast(C)pile,theyshuffledthepieceOneMoreRoundamongthosebuildings,andafteritsrevealed,itmarksthatthegameiscomingtoanend.Oncethenextroundhastakenplace,playerswillberewardedfortheirgoals,exchangetheirfundsforthepopulation,andtheonewiththelargestpopulationbecomesthewinner. Suburbiaisagameaboutattractingasmanypeopleaspossibletothestreetsofyourcityandkeepingtheminterested.Itisthereforenecessarytoproperlydistributeindividuallocations,usetheireffectsandfindtherightsynergybetweenthem.Eachplayerbuildstheirowncity.Andyetthereisasufficientshareofinteractioninthegame,whichdoesnotconsistonlyinthefightforpiecesinthecommonoffer. Thetopicisreallyelaboratedhereandsometimesyoufeellikeyouaresittingatabuildingsimulator.Completingthecitymakessenseandusesonlytwosimpleelements–financeandreputation.That’senoughtomakeyoufeelgreataboutawell-functioningcity. Butthebasisofsuccessisnotjustthecorrectconnectionofthepiece.Youmustalwayskeepinmindyourownsecretgoals,butalsothecommonones.Itisthroughthemthatyoucanfinallywinorfallintodeepholeofhistorywithametropolis,thatwillsoonbeforgotten.Seealso4.1Review:MunchkinDungeonSideQuestDušan·31.3.2021 Thereisabasegame,andthenthereareexpansionsincluded.Theboxcontainseverythingthathaseverbeenpublishedforthisgameanddeliversittoyourtableinasingle(andhuge)bulk.Theygraduallychangeeverythinginthegame,fromthewayofdeterminingthestartingplayer,throughtheinvolvementofnightlife.Ahugeamountofdetailmeansthatyouwilldiscoverthepiecesandtheirconnectionsforalongtimetocome.Wefeelthataftermorethantengameswehaven’tevenhadenoughtimetotastehalfofityet. Thegamehaswonderfullysimplebasicrules,onwhichthepropertiesofindividualbuildingsarepacked,butyoudonotneedtoknowtheminthebeginning.Itispossibletobrowsethemastheycomeonthemarket,becausetheyarealwayspublic.Andthatiswhyitispossibletoplayitwithlessexperiencedplayers,buteventhemostdemandingwillfindalotofopportunitiestorolloveropponents. Thegameisfantastic,especiallywithalowernumberofparticipants,wherethewholebattlecanfitinonehour.Atfour,itrequiresplayerstomakemoreandconstantchangestoyourplans,andaboveall,thegamestretchesmoresignificantly(uptotwicethetime).Weenjoyeditthemostintwo.Theonlydotofbeautyisthepackingofthewholebumblebeebackintothebox,whichcanstretchespeciallyifyouhaveshuffledsomeextensionsbetweenthepiecesandnowyouneedtoseparatethemagain. Thegraphicsofthewholegamearegreat.Theindividualpartsofthecityareelegantlyconnectedandatthesametimeremainclearthankstothecolordifferentiation.Alliconographyisinplaceandyouwillhavenoproblemswithorientation.Inaddition,youwillhaveallthosepiecesperfectlyorganizedthankstothefloodofplasticbinders.Theseareabonustohelpyouprepare,butwillslowdownthepackabit. Suburbiaistheultimatecitybuildingsimulatorandisdefinitelythebestgameofthisgenrewehaveevertried.Thisisagreatclassicandweareallthemoresurprised,thatithasfounditwaytoourtablesonlynow.Wecouldenjoyitallthemorenowinthecompleteedition,whichisreallymaximalist.Suburbia:Collector’sEditionisaluxuriousbuildingparadisethatwillawakentherightmayorinyou!
