ItwasJune10,1990,andtheflightcrewoftheMalaga-boundplane,aBAC-111aircraft,hadearlierperformedaroutinetake-offfromBirmingham. Butthen,overDidcot,theleft-handwindscreeninthecockpitcamelooseandflewoff,causingapotentiallydeadlydecompression. Theairlefttheflightdeckwithsuchforcethatthecockpitdoorwaspulledoffitshingesandhurledagainstthethrottlecontrols,causingtheplanetorapidlyaccelerateasitheadeddownwards. Thecaptain,TimLancaster,washalfsuckedout,withhislegscaughtontheflightcontrols. Whilehisfirstofficer,AlastairAtchison,foughttocontroltheaircraft,cabinattendantNigelOgden,who’dentertheflightdecktoaskifthepilotswantedanyrefreshments,grabbedholdofLancasterandheldontohimwithallhismight. MrLancaster’shead,meanwhile,wasbangingagainstthefuselage–thecrewwerecertainhe’ddied. MrOgdentoldtheSundayTimes:‘AllIcanrememberislookingatAlastairAtchinson,theco-pilot,strugglingtogettheplaneundercontrolandshouting“Mayday!Mayday!”intotheradio.’ Eventually,withthehelpofanotherflightattendant,SimonRogers,theyfreedMrLancaster’slegsfromthecontrolsandMrAtchisonwasabletomakeanemergencylandingatSouthampton,withnopassengerinjuries. ThatMrLancastersurvivedthe22-minuteordealismiraculous. Hewastreatedinhospitalforabrokenarm,frostbiteandseverebruising,whileMrOgdensufferedadislocatedshoulderandfrostbite. Itwasdiscoveredlaterthatthewindscreenwasnewlyfitted,butwithscrewsthatweretoosmallindiameter.All87oftheboltsflewoutoncetheaircraftgainedaltitude,owingtothedifferenceinpressurebetweentheinsideandoutsideofthefuselage.
