PhilosopherJohnRawlssuggeststhatweshouldimaginewesitbehindaveilofignorancethatkeepsusfromknowingwhoweareandidentifyingwithourpersonalcircumstances.Bybeingignorantofourcircumstances,wecanmoreobjectivelyconsiderhowsocietiesshouldoperate.
TwoprimaryprinciplessupplementRawls’veilofignorance:thelibertyprincipleandthedifferenceprinciple.
Accordingtothelibertyprinciple,thesocialcontractshouldtrytoensurethateveryoneenjoysthemaximumlibertypossiblewithoutintrudinguponthefreedomofothers.
Accordingtothedifferenceprinciple,thesocialcontractshouldguaranteethateveryoneanequalopportunitytoprosper.Inotherwords,ifthereareanysocialoreconomicdifferencesinthesocialcontract,theyshouldhelpthosewhoaretheworstoff.And,anyadvantagesinthecontractshouldbeavailabletoeveryone.
So,accordingtoRawls,approachingtoughissuesthroughaveilofignoranceandapplyingtheseprinciplescanhelpusdecidemorefairlyhowtherulesofsocietyshouldbestructured.Andfairness,asRawlsandmanyothersbelieve,istheessenceofjustice.
