PaulcallstheStateDepartment,whichtellshimthatduetothegovernmentpolicyofnotnegotiatingwithterrorists,itwillnotpaytheransombutwilltrytorescuehim.TheyconnecthimwithDanBrenner,headoftheHostageWorkingGroup,whotellsPaultheyareworkingtofindhim,toconservetheBlackberry'sbatterylife,andimploreshimnottomakethevideothatJabirhasdemanded.BrennerinformsPaulthatamannamedMarkWhitewasrescuedfromasimilarsituationthreeweekspriorandisnowhomesafewithhisfamily.Paulcallshismother,whoisinanursinghome,butshebarelyremembershimduetoseveredementia. Shortlyafterward,distantexplosionsshakethearea,whichdamagehiscoffin,causingittoslowlyfillwithsand.Hisemployer'slegalcounselcallshim,askinghimnottospeakwithanyoneinordertokeepthesituation"contained".Hisemployerthenbeginstorecordthecallandinformshimthathehasbeenretroactivelyterminatedfromhisjobearlierthatsameday(convenientlybeforehiscapture)duetoanallegedprohibitedrelationshipwithPamela.Becauseofthis,hiscompanywillnotonlynottakeanyresponsibilityforhiscapture,butheandhisfamilyalsowillnotbeentitledtoanybenefitsorpensionearnedwiththecompany. BrennercallssayingthattheexplosionsthatdamagedhiscoffinearlierwereinfactF-16bombingsandthathiskidnappersmayhavebeenkilled.Paulbeginstolosehopeandmakesalastwillandtestamentinvideoform,leavinghiswifehispersonalsavingsandhissonhisclothes.JabircallsdemandingPaulvideorecordhimselfcuttingoffafinger,threateningPaul’sfamilybackhomebyrevealingtheirhomeaddress.Paulcomplieswiththisdemand. Shortlyafterfilmingthevideo,hiscellphonerings,andPaulbeginstoheardigginganddistortedvoices.Thevoicesbecomeclearer,sayingtoopenthecoffin,andthecoffinopens.Itabruptlybecomesobviousthathehallucinatedtheencounter. BrennercallsandtellsPaulaninsurgenthasgivendetailsofwheretofindamanburiedalive,andthattheyaredrivingouttorescuehim.PaulthenreceivesatearfulcallfromhiswifeLinda,andheassuresherthatheisgoingtobeokay.Assandcontinuestofillthecoffintodangerouslevels,givingPaulsecondslefttolive,Brennercallsandtellshimthatheandtherescueteamhavearrivedattheburialsite.Throughthephone,diggingisheard,butPaulcannothearanydiggingaroundhim.Theteamdigsupacoffinandopensit,butitisrevealedthattheinsurgentledthemtoMarkWhite'scoffin,themanBrennerclaimedhadbeenrescued.Knowingthatheisnotgoingtobesaved,Paultriestocalmhimselfdownandacceptshisfate.ThefilmendswithBrennerprofuselyapologizingtoPaulasthesandfinallyfillsthecoffinandhesuffocatesasthelightgoesout,andthescreengoesblack.
