ThewarriorsrescuetheinhabitantsoftheransackedTurtleVillage,whichturnsouttobesituatedontheshellofagiantturtle.Theturtletakesthecharactersacrossthesea,andtheythenflytothecastleitselfonthebackofagianteagle.OnceatthecastletheydefeatDeathAdder,whoiswieldingtheGoldenAxe,andsavetheland.IntheMegaDrive/GenesisandPCversions,andalsoinotherports,thecharactersalsobattleDeathAdder'smentor,DeathBringer,asthetruefinalboss.Afterthefinalbattle,thewarriorsreceiveamagicalgoldenaxethatimbuestheplayerwithimmortality. ThearcadereleaseofthegameconcludeswithafourthwallbreakingendsequencewithsomechildrenplayingGoldenAxeatanarcade.Thearcadegamebreaks,andthecharactersfromwithinthegamefloodintothe"realworld,"withthechildrenbeingchasedbytheenemies,whoarebeingchasedbythethreewarriorsaswell. Gameplay[edit] ProgressismadethroughthegamebyfightingthroughDeathAdder'shenchmen,includingmenarmedwithclubsandmaces,skeletonwarriors,andknights.Playersareabletoattackusingtheirweapon,jumpandcastspellsthathurtallenemiesonthescreen.Theforceofthismagicdependsonthenumberof"bars"ofmagicpowercurrentlyavailable.Thebarsarefilledbycollectingblue"magicpotions"attainedbykickinglittlespriteswhothendropthepotions.Thesespritesappearduringregularlevelsandduringbonusstagesinbetweenlevels.ThemalewarriorAxisabletocastearthspells.ThedwarfGiliuscastslightningspellsandthefemalewarriorTyriscastsfiremagic.Eachcharacterhasadifferentmaximumnumberofmagicbarsandvaryingrangesofattack. Varioussteedsknownasbizarriansarefoundinthegame.Thesecanberiddenwhentheenemyriderisknockedoff,orifoneisfounddormant.TheleastpowerfulsteedisknownastheCockatrice(whichalsoappearedinAlteredBeast),[6]whichcanbeusedtoknockdownenemieswithaswipeofitstail.Themorepowerfuldragon,whichcaneithershootfireballsorbreathefiredependingonitscolorscheme,isfoundlaterinthegame. Iftheplayerstaketoolongtoadvance,skeletonswordsmenemergefromtheground,likeinthefilmJasonandtheArgonauts.[7] Inadditiontothemainquest,somehomeversionsofthegameincluded"duelmode",asurvivalmodetypegamethatpittedplayersagainstincreasinglypowerfulfoesinconsecutiveroundsofplay.Thismodealsofeaturedatwo-playerone-on-oneoption.
