Aladdin,astreet urchinintheArabiancityofAgrabah,andhismonkeyAbumeetPrincessJasmine,whohassnuckawayfromhershelteredlifeinthepalace.JasminewishestosucceedherfatherasSultan,butisinsteadexpectedtomarryoneofherroyalsuitors,includingthecharmingyetdimwittedPrinceAnders.Jafar,thegrand vizier,schemestooverthrowtheSultanandseeksamagic lamphiddenintheCaveofWonders,butonly"thediamondintherough"canenterthecave.
Jafar'spetparrotIagospotsAladdinandAbusneakingintotheroyalpalaceandvisitingJasmine.AladdinisthencapturedbyJafar.HeofferstomakeAladdinrichenoughtoimpressJasmineinexchangeforretrievingthelamp,andwarnshimtotakenothingelse.Insidethecave,Aladdinfreesamagic carpetandfindsthelamp,butAbucannotresisttouchingsometreasureandcausesthecavetocollapse.AladdingivesthelamptoJafar,whodoublecrossesandkickshimandAbuintothecave,butAbustealsthelampback.
