Thelackofacentreconsolestorageorarmrestisverynoticeable,althoughyougetfeelingalotofinteriordecisionsweremadeforeithercostorweightsaving,oramixtureofthetwo. Storageinthefrontisokatbest,withtwocentrecupholdersandacentrestoragearea.Youalsogetindoorcupholdersfrontandrear. Therearseatoccupantsareofferedlittle,withnofolddownarmrestorvents,onlyamappocketbehindthefrontpassengerseat. WiththesecondrowseatsinplacetheSuzukiSwiftSportoffers265Lofcargovolume,whichisstillabitoffthe300L+offeredbyFordandVolkswagen.There’s579Lwiththerearseatsdown. Thedashlayoutissimpleandclear,aswellashavingtheoptiontodisplay,power,torque,G-forces,braking,throttleandturboboostgauges.Theinfotainmentsystemisa7.0-inchtouchscreen,withsatellitenavigation,AppleCarPlay,AndroidAuto. TheSuzukiSwiftSportalsogetsblind-spotmonitoringwithrearcross-trafficalertandadaptivecruisecontrolwithSuzuki’sAdvancedForwardDetectionsystem. What’sunderthebonnet? TheSuzukiSwiftSporthasa1.4-litre‘BoosterJet’four-cylinderturbochargedpetrolengine,with103kWofpowerat5500rpmand230Nmoftorquefrom2500to3000rpm. Whileonpaperthesenumbersarewellbelowthatofitsmainrivals–allwithinthevicinityof150kW–theSwiftSportachievesmuchofitsperformanceduetoitslightweight.Weighinginatonly970kg(kerb)forthemanualand990kg(kerb)fortheauto,it’sover200kglighterthantheFordFiestaSTand300kglessthanaVWPoloGTI. Theweightadvantageclosesthestraightlineperformancegapmassivelyandalsotranslatestoimproveddynamicsandeconomy.Theengineismuchmorepotentthanyouwouldexpectandhasalivelyresponsivenature,evenfromlowintherevrange. Thecarwetestedhadtheoptionalsixspeedautomaticwithpaddleshifters,althoughthestandardsixspeedmanualisagreatpropositionforavehiclelikethis. Eventhoughitdoesn’thavealimitedslipdifferential,itslightweightandwell-tunedsuspensionmeanitisnotoverlymissed,givenyouhavesomelevelofthrottlecontrol. HowdoestheSuzukiSwiftSportdrive? DrivingisdefinitelythehighlightoftheSuzukiSwiftSport,offeringafunanddynamicchassisthatisbothcomfortableandresponsive. Duetothelightweightchassistheresponsivenessexceedsyourexpectationswhenyoupickupthepace.Thelevelofgripisimpressive,withthefrontendreactingtoyoureveryinput,withoutevenflinchingasacornertightensunexpectedly. Suzukihasnotfallenintothetrapthatsomanymanufactureshave,thinkingthatsportinessisdirectlylinkedtoharshness.Allowingthewheelstomoveandabsorbbumpswhilemaintainingbodycontrolisthekey,andthecompanyhasdonewellhere. Despitethesoftnatureofthesuspension,feedbacktothedriverisexcellentanditallowsyoutopushtheSwiftSportrighttothelimit.
