ThebrothersoverpowerMarcoandfleedowntheirapartmentcomplex'sstairwell.Whilechasingthem,MarcoshootsCarlosinthelegbutseemssurprisedbyhisownaction.Theyarethenstartledbyaloudexplosioninthedistancejustbeforetheyrealizethatthestairsturnouttobeendless,loopinginonthemselves.AsMarcogoesthroughtheitemsinhiswallet,hefindsaminiatureplayingcardwhichhedoesnotseemtorecognize.Hetearsthetinycardintopiecesanddoesnotpayitanyfurtherattention.OliverappliesfirstaidtohisbrotherbutcanonlywatchasCarlosbleedstodeaththenextday. Robertoexitsthecarandwalksoffthroughthebrushtoseekhelp.Withoutaccesstoherinhaler,Camiladies.Believingherselftobestuckinanightmare,Sandraabandonsherchildrenanddrivesoff,vainlyattemptingtowakeherself.Danielpicksuphissister'sbodyandbeginswalkingdowntheroadintheoppositedirection.Allofthemconvergetothesamespotandgiveuphopeofescape. Thirty-fiveyearslater,bothgroupsarestillstuckintheirrespectivelocations.Eachday,everyonefindsafreshcopyofalltheirpossessions.Overthedecades,theseitemsgatherintotoweringpilesasthetwogroupsattempttolivetheirrepetitivelives. SandraandRoberto,nowelderly,haveanimalisticsexwhileDaniellivesonhisownwithoutmuchinteractionwiththem.Inthestairwell,OliverkeepsfitthroughregularexerciseandleadstheelderlyMarcoinritualsworshipingCarlos'skeleton. AfterSandradies,RobertoandDanielholdafuneralwhereRobertoisstruckbyamomentoflucidityashe,too,nearsdeath.Hesayshenowunderstandswhytheyarestuck.TheelderlyRobertoandMarcoeachrevealtotheyoungerDanielandOliver,respectively,thatnoneofthisisreal,butratheranalternatedimensiontotheirreallives.Robertoexplainsthatwhenhewasa10-yearoldboy,hewasinanotherincidentstuckonaraft(madeofgreenbamboo)forthirty-fiveyears.Atthesametime,theelderlyMarcoexplainsthatheisreallyDaniel,the10-yearoldboyfromtheincidentoftheinfiniteroad,thusexplainingthecycleofincidentsandnewdimensions. Thesealternatedimensionssplitofffromrealityandformatimeloop.Theyarebroughtonbytragedyandtheemotionsthattheirinhabitantsfeelarefedbacktotheirrealworldpersonas.Theyoungerpersonstuckinanincidentfaresbetterthantheolderperson,whichiswhyyoungerpeopleinreallifehavemorehappinessandfortunethanolderpeoplewhoexperiencemoresadnessandmisfortune.Whiletheseexplanationsareprovided,weseeglimpsesofthecharacters'realliveswhichtakepositiveandnegativeturns.
