by:PeteBaiden8Sep202138ThefirstMunichMotorShowwasahugesuccess.OfficiallycalledIAAMobility,itspread rightacrossthecity,withatraditionalmotorshowspaceaswellasdisplaysinthecitycentreandevenatesttrackthatlinked themainlocations.TheMunichMotorShowhostedtherevealsofvariousnewmodels,andyoucanreadaboutall themostimportantonesbelowinourA-to-Zlistof carmakersandwhattheygot uptoattheshow.Bestcarsofthe2019FrankfurtMotorShowAudi,BMW,Cupra,Dacia,Hyundai,Mercedes,Polestar,Porsche,Renault,SmartandVolkswagen were allinattendanceattheMunichshow,buttherewere somekeymanufacturers whogavetheeventamiss:notably,Stellantisbrands,includingVauxhall,Peugeot,CitroenandFiat.The2021MunichMotorShow replaced thetraditionalFrankfurtMotorShowandwas builtaroundtheSummitarea,atypicalmotorshowspacewithhallsfullofnewproducts.Thisiswhereourreporterswerehardatwork chattingtoindustrybossesonthehuntfor ourfamousscoopsandexclusivenewsstories.ThentherewastheBlueLane,atesttrackthatran fromtheconferencecentretothecitycentre,wherevisitorscouldtryoutnewproducts,includingcarsandbicycles-sincethemotorshowwasfocusedonallformsofmobilityandnotjustcars.Finally,therewas theOpenSpaceinthecitycentre,wherevisitorstoMunichwere abletoseethenewcarsandothertransport.MunichMotorShow2021:newsheadlinesHyundaiannouncesplanstogoall-electricinEuropeby2035Hyundaitolaunchtwonewhydrogenfuelcellpowertrainsin2023PolestarRe:Moveconcept unveiledaslast-miledeliveryscooterRenaultandDaciatoseekpetrolanddieselcarbanextensionto2040Volkswagen ID.3GTXhothatchconfirmedforproductionHighperformanceVolkswagen ID.LifeGTXintheworksMunichMotorShow2021:gallery38MunichMotorShow2021:AtoZAudiAudiGrandsphereAudiSkysphereAudiRS3Audishowedofftwoofits'Sphere'concepts attheMunichMotorShow.Thefirst, the‘Grandsphere’,isanall-electricluxurycarthatpreviewsafutureA8limoreplacement.ItfeaturesLevel4autonomoustech,whilethe120kWhbatteryprovides710bhp,960Nmoftorqueandadrivingrangeofaround460milesbetweencharges.Italsofeaturesanewapproachtointeriordesign,withthecabinconstructedmainlyofsustainableorrecyclablematerials.Thehighlydigitalapproachcentresaroundanewinfotainmentsystemthatcanprojectafullcabin-widthimageontothesurfacewheninitsautonomousmode. AudialsoclaimstheGrandsphereistheclosestofthethreeSphereconcepts(theothersbeingtheSkysphereandtheasyetunseenUrbansphere)toaproductionmodel.ThesportySkysphere wasalsoinMunich.Itwasrevealedafewweekspriortotheshowandfeaturesdramaticswoopystylingthatissaidtopreviewthebrand'snext-generationdesigndirection.Theall-electricluxurytwo-seatroadsteralsoincorporatessomeradicalthinking,helpedbyitsvariablewheelbaseset-up,that'sclaimedtoprovideoccupantsoftheSkyspheretwoverydifferentexperiences.Powercomesfromabatterythat“isexpectedtobemorethan80kWh”foraclaimed WLTP rangeof500km(around310miles).Thebatteryfeedsoneelectricmotormountedontherearaxleproducing623bhpand750Nmoftorque;AudiclaimsthattheSkysphereweighsaround1,800kg,whichresultsina0-62mphtimeof4.0seconds.Ifthose twoadvancedconceptsweren't enoughtodragyoutoAudi'sMunichstandthentherewas alsothefirstchancetogetup-close-and-personalwiththegiant-slayinghyperhatch,theRS3.Already unveiledinfullonline,theMercedes-AMGA45Srivalreturned withitstrademark2.5-litreturbochargedfive-cylinderthatpumpsoutamuscular395bhpand500Nmoftorque.Combinedwithaseven-speeddual-clutchautomaticandquattroall-wheeldrive,AudisaystheRS3cangetfrom0-62mphinjust3.8secondsbeforerunningintoitsspeedlimiterat155mph.IntheUK,theRS3thathasclaimedtheNurburgringlaprecordforcompactcars,ispricedfrom£50,900.BMWBMWiX3faceliftBMWiX5HydrogenBMWiVisionCircularBMW useditshomemotorshowtoshowoffitsviewofasustainablefutureintheformoftheiVisionCircular.Thestrikingconceptisavisionofa2040hatchback anditfeaturesahostofnewdesignelements,includingare-thinkofthebrand'siconickidneygrillesandanoverhauledrear. However,theiVisionCircularisallabouthelpingtheplanetandisbuiltfrom100percentrecycled materials,whicharealsoabletoberecycledthemselves.Therefore,everypartofthecarisdesignedtoberemovedandtakenapartquickly.BMW alsorolled outitshydrogenfuel-cellpoweredX5SUV atMunich.CalledtheiX5Hydrogen,thezero-emissionSUV isalso availableforshowgoerstotakeshortridesinaheadofits2022debut.Featuringauniqueblue-tintedgrille,lightweight22-inchalloysandarevisedreardiffuserwithblankswheretheexhaustssitonICE-poweredX5s,theshort-productionrunofiX5saredrivenbyapairofelectricmotorsthatgenerateacombined369bhp.Employingfuel-celltechdevelopedinpartnershipwithToyota,theBMWiX5Hydrogenisclaimedtocombineanunconfirmedlongrangewithafour-minuterefuellingtime.Aswellasthebiggerhydrogen-poweredX5,BMWalso debutedtherecentlyupdatedpure-electriciX3thatreceivedmildcosmeticupdatesandmoretech.CupraCupraBornCupraUrbanRebelSpanishperformancebrand,Cupra,nveiledthe UrbanRebel conceptatMunich,whichgivesanindicationofthedesignlanguagethemanufacturerwillemployonitsmoreaffordable,smallerelectriccars.Lookpastthemotorsportaddendaand theshapeprovidesaninterestinginsightinto how asmallCupraEVmightlook.AlthoughCuprasaystheUrbanRebelhas335bhp,withtheabilityto produceupto429bhpforshortperiods,aproductioncarismorelikelytohavearound200bhpandarear-wheel-driveset-up.Cupraalsoused theMunichshowtounveilitsall-newBornelectrichatchthat'sclosely-relatedtotheVolkswagenID.3.Beneaththeskin,theCupraBornwillbeofferedwitheithera148bhpor228bhpelectricmotorthat,withthelargest77kWhbatteryprovidesarangeofupto335miles.Pricedfrom£32,000includingthegovernment's£2,500grant,deliveriesbegininearly2022,whiletheformerSEATsub-brandsaysit'stunedtheBorntobefuntodrive.DaciaDaciaJoggerBudgetcarmakerDaciashowedoffits newseven-seatMPVcalledtheJogger -a replacementfortheRomanianbrand’sLodgyseven-seaterMPV.It’sbeenconfirmedtobecomingtotheUK,despitethismodelhavingbeenpreviouslyonlyavailableinothermarkets. It usesthesamearchitectureasthenewSanderoandSanderoStepway,butit’s largertoaccommodatetheextrapassengerseatsinside.Italsousesthesameengines,includingasmallpetroland theLPG-equippedBi-Fuelmodel.KiaKiaSportageKia showcasedtheall-newEuropean-specSportagefamilySUVinplug-inhybridformatthe2021Munichshow.It'sthefirsttimethebrandhasproducedaspecificmodelfortheEuropeanmarket.TheSUVpacks a13.8kWhbatteryfeedinga90bhpelectricmotorthatworksinconjunctionwitha1.6-litreturbochargedpetrolunit.TheKoreanbrand'sfirstelectriccartobebasedontheE-GMPplatform,theEV6,also made itsEuropeandebut.MercedesMercedesC-ClassAll-TerrainMercedesEQEMercedesConceptEQGMercedes-AMGEQS 53Mercedes-AMGGT4-Door63E-PerformanceMercedes-Maybach ConceptEQSMercedes launchedahostofnewcarsatMunich,includingfive pure-electricvehiclesandonenewperformancehybrid.Themostimportantdebutwas the MercedesEQE saloon.SettotakeontheTeslaModelS,theEQEwillgoonsalein2022asanall-electricalternativetotheE-Classexecandwillofferupto410milesonasinglechargethankstoitslarge90kWhbattery.TwoversionswillgoonsaleintheUK,butMercedeswillonlyshowtheEQE350atMunich,whichwillfeature288bhpand530Nmoftorque.TheConceptEQGjoined theEQEonMercedes'stand,previewingafutureall-electricversionoftheG-Class.Noperformancefigureswere quoted,buttheGermanbrandhaspromisedthattheproductionversionoftheEQGwillofferthesameruggedoff-roadabilityastheG-Classwhenitarrivesin2024. AMG alsorevealed itsfirsteverelectricperformancemodelintheshapeoftheEQS53.Promising751bhpintopspecDynamicPlustrim,it'llsprintfrom0-62mphinjust3.8secondsandgoontoanelectronically-limited138mph. Plus,wehad ourfirstlookatthe EQSSUV,asthenewMaybachConceptEQSpreviewed theflagshipvariantoftheupcomingall-electric luxurySUV.Ifthatwasn'tenough,the Mercedes-AMGGT4-Door63SE-Performance-thebrand'smostpowerfulevermodelwith831bhp-was onshow,alongwiththenewC-ClassAll-Terrain.ORAORA CatChinesemanufacturerGreatWallconfirmedthatits all-electricsubbrand,ORA,iscomingtotheUKatMunich -andthefirstmodelwillbecalledtheCat..TheretrolookshideanEVthatissimilarinsizetotheVWID.3,butislikelytosignificantlyundercutitsrivalwithastartingpriceofbetween£25kand£30k. TheCatfeaturesa63kWhbattery,whichthebrandclaimsisgoodenoughforarangeof250miles,whilethe169bhpmotorwillhelpitsprintfrom0-62mphin8.5seconds.It'sexpectedtogoonsalelaterthisyear,withdeliverieslikelyinthefirstquarterof2022.PorschePorscheMissionRconceptWanttoknowwhatthefutureall-electricPorsche718Caymanwilllooklike?WellthenewMissionRconceptmightjustgiveyoutheanswer.Porsche'sMunichshowstarwas a cardesignedforasingle-makeracingseries,butthosebehindtheconcepthaveconfirmedtheyareworkingon productioncarsatthesametime-andthat'slikelytomeanaCaymanEV.TheMissionRispoweredbyabatteryofaround80kWh,whiletwoelectricmotorshelpitproduceupto1,072bhp.Thisfigureisonlyavailableforshortperiodsthough,withthenormaloperatingpowercominginat671bhp.Topspeedisquotedatover180mph,whileit'llcoverthe0-62mphsprintinjust2.5seconds.RenaultMobilizeLimoRenault5RenaultMeganeE-TechElectricSUVRenaulthad astrongline-upattheMunichshow,startingwiththenewMeganeE-Techelectriccar.It’safully-electricversionofthepopularfamilycarandwillrivalthe VolkswagenID.3. TheRenault5electriccarprototypealsomadeanappearanceontheshowstand,aswellassomeclassicRenault5modelstocompareitwith. Finally,therewere vehiclesfromthenewMobilizebrand,whichRenaultisusingtoshowitsplannedrangeofurbanvehicles,likelytobecalledDuo,Bento,LimoandHippo.ThisservicelookslikeitwillproduceasuccessortotheoddballTwizy,butwithamoremodernsalespolicywithchargesbasedontimespentinthecarandpaidbysmartphone.SmartSmartConcept#1Smartshowcased thestartofitspushupmarketandintolargervehiclesegmentsatMunich,withnewparentcompanyGeelyatthehelm.Thecompanyunveiledits Concept#1electricSUV,whichditchessomeofthebrand’sfamed“smallness”infavourofamorepremiumimage. Itwillmorphintoafreshrivalforthe MINICountryman and AudiQ2 in2023andwillbethefirstcarusingthenewGeelydevelopedSEAall-electriccarplatform.VolkswagenVolkswagenID.LifeVolkswagenPoloGTI faceliftVolkswagenTaigoVolkswagenstunnedtheMunichshowwithasurprise-thenewID.Life.Theconceptisanall-electric'crossover'thatwillmergeintoaproductioncarby2025,sitting belowthelargerID.3inthebrand'slineup.Thatmeansthatit'slikelytocarrytheID.1orID.2badgewhenitarrives.TheID.Lifefeaturesanumb
