GoogleScholarisapopularwaytoshowcaseyourpapersandthecitationsthey’vereceived.GoogleScholaralsocalculatesaplatform-dependenth-index,whichmanyresearcherslovetotrack(forbetterorforworse). Inthisweek’schallenge,we’regoingtogetyouontoGoogleScholar,soyoucanupyourscholarlySEO(aka“Googleability”),moreeasilyshareyourpublicationswithnewreaders,anddiscovernewcitationstoyourwork. Step1:Createyourbasicprofile Logontoscholar.google.comandclickthe“MyProfile”linkatthetopofthepagetogetyouraccountsetupstarted. Onthefirstscreen,addyouraffiliationinformationandOUemailaddress,soGoogleScholarcanconfirmyouraccount.Addkeywordsthatarerelevanttoyourresearchinterests,sootherscanfindyouwhenbrowsingasubjectarea.ProvidealinktoyourOUfacultyorlab homepage,ifyouhaveone. Ifthereareotherswhoshareyourname,theirarticlesmayshowupasyoursatthispoint.Don’tdespair!Goaheadandaddthosearticles,eventhoughthey’renotyours.Youwillthenhaveachancetodeletetheminthenextstep(andaspartofthisweek’shomework). Click“Next,”and–that’sit!Yourbasicprofileisdone.Now,let’saddsomepublicationstoit. Step2:Addpublications Googlehaslikelyalreadybeenindexingyourworkforsometimenowaspartoftheirmissionasascholarlysearchengine,sothisstepisprettyeasy.. GoogleScholarwillprovideyouwithgroupsofarticlestheybelievebelongtoyou.Selectanygroupthatisyourwork.Ifyoudon’tseeyourarticlesinagroup,click"Searcharticles"todoasearch,andaddyourarticlesoneatatime.Clickthebluearrowatthetopleftofthepagetomoveontothenextstep. Asmentionedabove,theremaybepublicationsinthearticlegroupsthatyoudonotwantincludedonyourprofile.Thesemayincludenewsletteritemsorarticlesthatdonotreflectyourcurrentresearchinterest.Theymayalsoincludearticlesfromresearchersotherthanyourself.Youcanmanuallydeletethoseafteryouhavecreatedyouraccount. Yourprofileisnowalmostcomplete!Twomoresteps:addaphotobyclickingyouravatarnexttoyournameandprofileinformation,andsetyourprivateprofileto“Public.” Step3:Makeyourprofilepublic Yourprofileisprivateifyou’vejustcreatedit.Youcanchangeyourprofilevisibilitybyclickingthepenciliconnexttoyournameandchecking“Makemyprofilepublic”inthewindowthatappears.If,atanytime,youwanttorevertyourprofiletoprivateagain,youcandosobyclickingthepenciliconnexttoyourname. Bonus:Addco-authors Whileyourprofileistechnicallycomplete,you’llwanttotakeadvantageofGoogleScholar’sbuilt-inco-authorshipnetwork.Addingco-authorsisagoodwaytoletothersknowyou’renowonGoogleScholar,andwillbeusefullateroninachallenge,whenwesetupautomaticalertsthatcanhelpyoustayontopofnewresearchinyourfield. Toaddasuggestedco-author,findthe“Co-authors”sectionontheright-handsectionofyourprofilejustunderneaththe“Citedbar”bargraph.Click“EDIT”totherightof“Co-authors.”Inthewindowthatappears,youcansearchforyourco-authors.IftheyhaveaGooglescholarprofile,youcanselecttheplussignnexttotheirnametoaddthemtoyourco-authorlist.Afteryou’veselectedtheplussign,youwillneedtothenclickonthebluecheckmarkatthetopofthewindow. That’sit!Nowyou’vegotaGoogleScholarprofilethathelpsyoutrackwhenyourworkhasbeencitedbothinthepeer-reviewedliteratureandisanotherscholarlylandingpagethatwillconnectotherswithyourpublications.Thebestpart?GoogleScholar’sprettygoodatautomaticallyaddingnewstufftoyourprofile,meaningyouwon’thavetodoalotofworktokeepitup. Limitations Dirtydataintheformofincorrectpublicationsisn’ttheonlylimitationofGoogleScholaryoushouldbeawareof.ThequalityofGoogleScholarcitationshasalsobeenquestioned,becausethey’redifferentfromwhatscholarshavetraditionallyconsideredtobeacitationworthcounting:acitationinthepeer-reviewedliterature. GoogleScholarcountscitationsfromprettymuchanywheretheycanfindthem.Thatmeanstheircitationcountoftenincludescitationsfromonlineundergraduatepapers,slides,whitepapersandsimilarsources.Becauseofthis,GoogleScholarcitationcountsaremuchhigherthanthosefromcompetitorslikeScopusandWebofScience. Thatcanbeagoodthing.Butyoucanalsoargueit’s“inflating”citationcountsunfairly.ItalsomakesGoogleScholar’scitationcountsquitesusceptibletogamingtechniqueslikeusingfakepublicationstofraudulentlyraisethenumbers.We’venotheardmanyevaluatorscomplainingabouttheseissues,butit’sgoodtobeawareofthem. GoogleScholaralsosharesalimitationwithtwoscholarlysocialmediasiteswe’llbeexploringinlaterchallenges: ResearchGateandAcademia.edu.Eachofthesesitesaresomewhatofaninformationsilo.Youcannotexportyourcitationdata,meaningthatevenifyouweretoamassveryimpressivecitationstatisticsontheplatform,theonlywaytogetthemontoyourwebsite,CV,oranannualreportistocopyandpastethem–waytoomuchtediumformostofustoendure.Theirsiloedapproachtoplatformbuildingdefinitelycontributestoresearchers’profilefatigue. Itsfinalmajorlimitation?There’snotellingifGoogleScholarwillbearoundtomorrow.RememberGoogleReader?Googlehasahistoryofkillingbelovedproductswhenthebottomlineisinquestion. It’snotexaggeratingtosaythatGoogleScholarProfilescouldliterallygoawayatanymoment.GoogleScholarisnotaloneinthis;werecognizethatseveraloftheservicesintheOUImpactChallengecouldsufferthesamefate.That’swhyoneofthemostimportantchallengeswillcomeinafewweeks–uploadingyourworktoSHAREOK. Homework GoogleScholarcanonlyautomatesomuch.TofullycompleteyourGoogleScholarprofile,let’smanuallyaddanymissingarticles.Andlet’salsoteachyouhowtoexportyourpublicationinformationfromGoogleScholar,becauseyou’llwanttoreuseitonotherplatforms. 1.Addmissingarticles YoumighthaveanarticleortwothatGoogleScholardidn’tautomaticallyaddtoyourprofile.Ifthat’sthecase,you’llneedtoadditmanually. Clickthe“+”buttoninthegreytoolbaraboveyourlistedarticles. Select“Addarticlesmanually”fromthedropdownmenu.Thenyoushouldseethisscreen. It’sherewhereyoucanaddnewpaperstoyourprofile.Includeasmuchdescriptiveinformationaspossible–itmakesiteasierforGoogleScholartofindcitationstoyourwork.Click“Save(thebluecheckmarkatthetoprightofthewindow)”afteryou’vefinishedaddingyourarticlemetadata,andrepeatasnecessaryuntilallofyourpublicationsareonGoogleScholar. 2.CleanupyourGoogleScholarProfiledata ThankstoGoogleScholarProfiles’“autoadd”functionality,yourProfilemightincludesomearticlesyoudidn’tauthor.Ifthat’sthecase,youcanremovetheminoneoftwoways: Clickingonthetitleofeachoffendingarticletogettothearticle’spage,andthenclickingthetrashcaninthetoprightofthepopupwindow. FromthemainProfilepage,tickingtheboxesnexttoeachincorrectarticleandselectingthe“Delete”fromthegreybaraboveyourarticles GoogleScholarwillautomaticallyupdateyourprofilewhenitfindsnewpublicationitbelievesareyours. Youcankeepacloseeyeonwhatarticlesareautomaticallyaddedtoyourprofilebysigningupforalertsandmanuallyremovinganyincorrectadditionsthatappear.Here’showtosignupforalerts: Clicktheblue“Follow”buttonatthetopofyourprofile Select“Newarticlesinmyprofile” Entertheemailaddresswhereyouwantthesealertssent Click“DONE.” 3.LearnhowtoexportyourpublicationslistinBibTeXformat Therewilllikelybeatimewhenyou’llwanttoexportyourGoogleScholarpublicationstoanotherservice,andwe’llaskyoutodothatinafuturechallenge.Ifyoualreadyhaveaccountswithotherservices,here’showtoexportinBibTeXformat.Pleaseknow:oneofthereasonswehadyousignupforORCiDfirst,isthatthiscanoftenbedoneautomaticallythroughORCiD’ssyncingcapabilities.ButforothertimesyoumaywanttoexportinBibTeXformat: Ticktheboxnexttoeacharticlewhosedetailsyouwanttoexport.(Ifyouwanttoexportallyourarticles,ticktheboxtotheleftofTITLEinthegraybarabovethelistofyourworks.)Clickthe"Export"button,andthenchooseBibTeXtoexportyourfile.YouwillgetabrowserwindowwithyourcitationsinBibTeXformat,whichyoucanthen“Saveas…”orcopy/pastetoatexteditorandsave.
