IntheIMF'sWorldEconomicOutlook(WEO)reportissuedonTuesday,titled"RecoveringDuringaPandemic,"IMFchiefeconomistGitaGopinathwrotethatdespitethecontinuingglobalrecovery,themomentumhasweakened,hobbledbythepandemic. "Riskstoeconomicprospectshaveincreased,andpolicytrade-offshavebecomemorecomplex,"Gopinathwrote. Asaresult,globaleconomicgrowthisprojectedtobe5.9percentthisyear,down0.1percentagepointsfromtheWEOJulyupdatethisyear,and4.9percentnextyear,remainingthesameaslasttime. "Thedownwardrevisionfor2021reflectsadowngradeforadvancedeconomies--inpartduetosupplydisruptions--andforlow-incomedevelopingcountries,largelyduetoworseningpandemicdynamics,"thereportsaid. However,theIMFraiseditsforecastforTaiwan'sGDPgrowththisyearto5.9percent,up1.2percentagepointsfromitsAprilestimate,andup2.7percentagepointsfromitsestimateinOctoberlastyear. Theestimatewasslightlyhigherthanthe5.88percentannualGDPgrowththatTaiwan'sDirectorate-GeneralofBudget,AccountingandStatistics(DGBAS)forecastinAugust. AsforTaiwan'sGDPgrowthin2022,theIMFalsoraiseditto3.3percent,up0.3percentagepointsfromitsAprilestimate,slightlylowerthanDGBAS'estimate,whichis3.69percent. Oftheothereconomiescomprisingthe"FourAsianTigers,"the2021GDPsofSouthKorea,Singapore,andHongKongareexpectedtogrowby4.3percent,6percent,and6.4percent,respectively,theIMFreportsaid. Thesamethreeeconomiesareexpectedtoincreaseby3.3percent,3.2percent,and3.5percentnextyear,respectively,itsaid. Chinaisexpectedtogrowby8percentin2021and5.6percentin2022,bothdown0.1percentagepointfromtheWEOJulyupdatethisyear,whileJapanisexpectedtogrowby2.4percentand3.2percentin2021and2022,respectively. TheUnitedStatesisexpectedtogrowby6percentin2021,down1percentagepointfromtheWEOJulyupdate,and5.2percentin2022,up0.3percentagepoint.
