TheCitadelislocatedinCity17,andresemblesamassive,metallicskyscraperstandingtens,ofthousands,offeetintheair.Itisafortressthatrisesbothhighintotheskyandextendsagreatdistanceundergroundaswell.Itisatriangularstructurewhenviewedfromabove,andwascrownedbyaDarkEnergyReactor.Itsassociatedportalwastheprimarymeansofcommunicationwithoff-worldCombineforces.TheCitadel'smassiveinteriorleveliscapableofhousingamassivearmyofOverwatchSolders,withthebuildingitselfbeingheavilymechanized,andentiresectionsofitcanmovetoallowformassdeploymentofairborneCombineunitssuchasCityScanners,Hunter-ChoppersandCombineGunships.Intheupperfloorsofthecitadel,alargefactorywhereCombineGunshipsarerepairedandaugmentedcanbefoundintheCitadel,andalargeflaponthecitadel'sexteriorliftsuptoallowthesynthstoexittheCitadeltocontinuethewaragainstTheResistance. TheCitadelhastwoknown"states,"orconfigurationsthatthetowertakesdependingonspecificsituations.Thefirstoftheseiswhatwasmostlikelythedormantconfiguration,whichwasprobablymaintainedduringthewholelifeinthecity,whennoseriousthreatswereposedtotheCombine(thestructurealsotakesthisshapeduringHalf-Life2:EpisodeOne).Thisconfigurationwassignifiedbyasinglesetofrib-likestructuresexposedwithintherighthalfoftheCitadel,withanoutermetalplatingretractedslightlyabovetheinnerplating.However,shortlyafterGordonFreemanwastransportedinsideBreen'sofficeintheCitadelduringthemalfunctioningofDr.Kleiner'steleporter,BreenputstheCitadelonalert,causingthestructuretochangetoitsalertedstate.TheCitadelcanbeseenchangingitsconfigurationwhileBarneyCalhoungivesGordonacrowbar.Barneysaysthatthisisarareoccasion,stating"I'veneverseenitlituplikethat."Theinnerplatingretractsupwards,exposingatotaloffoursetsof"ribs",atthestartofRouteKanal,wherethereconfigurationhasfullycompleted.Duringthistransformationaloudalarmresonates,echoingforseveralsecondseachtimeitsounds,possiblyemanatingfromtheCitadelitself.Asmallpieceofplatingbarelyvisibleontheleft(southern)sideoftheCitadelalsodescendspartlydownthetower,scannersrapidlydeployfromaroundthatareaonthetower,andtheCitadelremainsinthisconfigurationfortheremainderofthegame.TheCitadelcanalsobeseenfromtherearnearthefirstgateandWaterHazard,showingadullpairofmetalstripsseparatedbyoneverticalwhitebeam.WhenFreemansabotagesthereactor,theplatingdescendstothe"allclear"stateandcoverstheribs.Thelowersetofribsdescendsalongthetowerandlocksinplacebehindthelowestpanelontheright-handsideofthestructure.ItcanbetheorizedthatthereareotherconfigurationstheCitadelmaytakeindifferentsituations,butthesetwoaretheonlyconfigurationsdepictedinthegame. ThebookRaisingtheBarmentionsthatentireblocksfromCity17vanishedintothinairastheCombinedeliveredtheCitadeltoEarth.However,thiswaslikelychangedduringdevelopmentasthegameshowsnosignsofsuchanevent.--ThetrailerforHalf-Life:AlyxshowstheCitadelunderconstruction,confirmingitwasbuiltbytheCombineaftertheSevenHourWar.Itshouldbenoted,however,thattheCorewasteleportedtoEarthasapinnaclestructureaboutthesizeofthecitadelintotheground,likelycontainedwithinthestructure. TheCitadeliscompletelysurroundedbyenormousSmartBarrierswhichcrushbuildingsaroundtheCitadelandpreventaccessfromthestreets,protectingthestructureandpreventingrebelsfromadvancing. AttachedtotheexteriorwallsoftheCitadel,inahugechasmwithbrokensewerpipesanddestroyedvehicles,areothermachinesthatdigtheground,possiblyexpandingtheundergroundareatoallowfurtherconstructionorcreatingexterioraccesstothelowerlevels.ThechasmdoesnotsurroundtheCitadel,butinsteadsurroundsonlythemachines,thisimpliesthewholechasmwasdugbythem.ThesemachinesaretheorizedtobefunctionedasgiantRestrictorstorepelAntlions,thoughsuchtheoryisunlikelyasthevibrationscouldnotcovertheentirecity.Thegamefilesandthebookalsomentionthemachinesas"Diggers"insteadofthumpers,implyingitsdiggingnature. TheexistenceofmoreCitadelslocatedaroundtheworldismentionedin-gamebyDr.KleinerandisalsomentionedbyEliinTheFinalHoursofHalf-Life:Alyx,thenumberofCitadelsonEarthstillremainsunknown,itisalsounknownwhethertheyallbearthesamealtitudeandappearance. Lowerlevels TheCitadel'sCore,exceedinglyclosetocollapse. InthefirstfewchaptersofHalf-Life2:EpisodeOne,theplayerisgivenafirsthandlookatmuchofthelowerlevelsoftheCitadel.WhilstmostlylookingverymuchthesameastherestoftheCitadel,nowarfactoriesorsynthmanufacturingplantsarelocatedinthisareaofthestructure.Duringthispointinthegame,theCitadelcanbeseenextremelyunstable,withanorangeglowthroughoutthestructureincontrasttotheblueitusedtobewhenfunctional.Fireshavespreadacrossthestructureandmuchdebrisfromwhat'sleftoftheupperlevelsisconstantlyfallingdowntothelowerlevels. AnemergencyevacuationandtransportchamberforAdvisorsislocatedinthelowerlevelsoftheCitadel.TheroomissignificantlydifferentfromthatoftherestoftheCitadel,givingoffaneerieredglowfromhundredsofbrightlightsmountedonthewallsincontrasttotheblueandorangethatcharacterizestheCitadelatthetime.Theroomappearstobeusedasatransportchamber,butmayalsobeusedforevacuations,allowingAdvisorstoquicklyescapeintimeswheretheCitadelisinperil.TheAdvisorPodsarelocatedundertheglassflooroftheroomandwhenpreparingtodocktheyriseupandmovethroughatubebeforepositioningthemselvesinachuteandmovingupwards.ItislikelythatmanymorechambersarepresentthroughouttheCitadel. TowardtheverybottomoftheCitadelisitscorewhichisonlyaccessibleviaaliftthatdescendsseveraldozenfloors.Thecorechamberisprotectedbylargeblastdoorscarryinganinsigniawiththeappearanceofastylizedversionoftheinternationalsymbolforradioactivity.Alargecontrolroomissituatedoverlookingthecorewithacentralaccessliftleadingdowntoitschamber,similarindesigntothecontrolroomoverlookingtheDarkFusionreactorattheoppositeendofthestructure.Threeroomsarelocatedacrossthechamberwhicharespecificallydesignedtohelpstabilizethecoreintheeventthatitsenergyoutputbecomesunstable.Themachinesintheseroomsformathreefoldcontainmentsystemthatensuresthattheintensityofthedarkenergyreactionwithinthecorestayswithinsafelimits.ConnectedontothecoreitselfisatrainstationwhereitislikelythatRazorTraincargoisemptied.ThispointintheCitadelliesapproximatelyonekilometerbelowthesurfaceandtheconnectedtunnelextendsthroughoutCity17andbeyond. Centrallevels RazorTrainseeninsidetheCitadel. InthefinalchaptersofHalf-Life2,theplayerisgivenaninsightintotheinterioroftheCitadel,whichcontrastsitsfeaturelessexterior.AbundanceofCombinetechnologyisfoundwithintheCitadel,rangingfromcountlessgeneratorsandforcefields,tomatterdisintegrationfields,toelevatorsandplatformsthatdefygravity,togianttubesthattransportunknownfluids.TheentirebuildingisconstructedfromthesameblackishbluemetalmaterialthatallCombinestructuresaremadefrom.Noattemptismadeatalltoprovidepersonnelwithanyformofwarmthorpleasantaesthetic.Everythingissharp,cold,andsoulless,mirroringthatoftheCombine'srule.Noregardisplacedatalltothecoveringofthepipingandelectronics.Themetalisunfinishedandoxidizing.Thehumanfeaturesthatarepresenthowever,suchaswalkways,stairsandladders,seemtojustbeanafterthought,asiftheusabilityforhumanswasnotafirsthandpriority. Allinvading"visitors"haveweaponsstrippedusingaconfiscationfield,presumablytoavoidpreciselythesituationwhichoccursattheendofHalf-Life2andrecursatthebeginningofEpisodeOneironically,becauseofthepresenceofaconfiscationfield. TherearerailwaysystemsrunningthroughouttheCitadelthatareusedbyRazorTrainstoshipanddelivercargo.MuchofthiscargoconsistsofnewStalkersfromNovaProspekt.Stalkersaredeliveredinpods,andtheCitadelincludesalargetransportationsystemforthesepods.Taskssuchastheoperationofbasicpanels,ortherepairingofdamagedCombineequipmentandunitsaredonebyStalkers,undertheconstantsupervisionofOverwatchpersonnelorscanners. TheCitadelispresumedtoincludelargewarfactories,whereCombineequipment,technologyandweapons,aswellasSynthsaremanufactured.TwotypesofSynththatwereneverencounteredelsewhereduringthegame,theCrabSynthandtheMortarSynth,canbeseenbeingtransportedaroundonconveyorbelts,indicatingthattheyarepossiblymanufacturedintheCitadelanddeliveredaway.TheCitadelalsoprovidesacentralhubforOverwatchsoldiers(includingElites),whoarepresentinoverwhelmingnumbers,andisthelaunchingpointforGunships. Upperlevels TheinteriorofDoctorBreen'sofficeatanupperleveloftheCitadel,asGordonFreemanistransferredin. Beforereachingtheverytopofthecitadel,FreemanpassesthroughmanyopenareasofthecitadelwhereenormoussegmentsofthecitadelexteriorareopentoallowDropshipsandgunshipstoquicklyexitandenterthecitadel'sinterior. OnoneoftheverytoplevelsoftheCitadelisDoctorBreen'soffice,believedtobethelocationfromwhichhetransmitshisBreencasts-thoughthewallsdonotmatchhis"studio"backdrop,suggestingthereisaseparateroomforthatpurpose.UnliketherestoftheCitadel,Breen'sofficehasamoreclassical,humanlooktoit,althoughCombinearchitectureisstillaverydominating,albeitaesthetic,featureintheroom.Hisofficeincludesvariousluxuryitemssuchasawoodendesk,mantleclock,leatherseat,globe,expensivecarpeting,tiledfloors,andbustsofhimself,muchlikethegeneratorroomsintheOverwatchnexus.Hisofficealsocontainsalargesetofmonitors,whichactashispersonalcomputer,andfromwhichhecancommunicatewithcontactssuchastheAdvisors.Breen'sofficeisconnectedtotheprisonertransportsystemusedbyGordonFreeman,andtherearemanyotherprisonerpodsaroundhisoffice.Otherwise,morewelcomeguestscanaccesstheofficeviaanelevatorconnectedtothedarkfusionreactororaseparatedoorfromtheprisonerentrance.ItcanbeassumedthatBreenlivesintheCitadelaswellasworksinit,presumablyneverleavingit,astheAdvisors. TheverytopoftheCitadelcontainstheCombine'sdarkfusionreactor-thatseemstobedirectlyconnectedtoBreen'soffice,whichisusedtopowertheirtunnelingentanglementdeviceandallowthemtotunnelintoEarthfromtheiruniverse.AttheendofHalf-Life2,GordonmanagestodestabilizeanddestroythedarkfusionreactorusingEnergyBalls. TheCitadelisunderconstructionatthetimeofHalf-Life:Alyx,fiveyearsbeforetheeventsofHalf-Life2,orroughlyfifteenyearsaftertheSevenHourWar.ThissuggeststhateithertheCitadeltookseveralyearstobebuiltorthatconstructionbeganrelativelylateintotheCombine'sinvasion,orperhapsboth. TheinitialformoftheCitadelstartedwhentheCombinedeliveredtheCoretoearth,containedwithingaspirestructurethatwasembeddedintothefloorthroughthemeansofteleportation;thecitadelwasthenbuiltarounditfromundergroundtotop.TheCitadelconstructionconsistsofgatheredresourcesfromEarth,whichwerecollectedbytheCombineandconvertedtotheirbluishmaterial.[3] AttachedtotheconstructionareasallovertheCitadelareseveralsetsofslackgroupedcables,withsubstationstructuresonthegroundprovidingsupporttothem.ThoseweremostlikelyprovidingenergytotheCitadelfromanexternalsource,astheCorewasnon-functionalandsufferingblackoutsbythetime.ThelocationofthecoreonAlyx'swhiteboardsuggestsitwasmovedtotheundergroundlevelslateron.[4] Thegroupofcablesseemtobeconnectedtoelevatorlikestructures,calledscaffoldsbyAlyx,whichareprobablytaskedwithautomatedconstructionormasstransportofmaterials. Setsofsmallcablesalsoexpandconnectiontothecityfromthestructureslikeconventionalpowerlines,suggestingthestructuresfunctioninasimilarwaytosubstations.Thesecableswereconnectedtorooftopsbyconstructionstriders. Destruction TheCitadelshortlybeforeitsdestructioninEpisodeOne. InEpisodeOne,theaftermathofGordon'sassaultontheCitadelisclearlyvisible.TheoverloadingoftheDarkFusionreactorhasdownedpoweranddestabilizedthestructureofthewholebuilding,andGordonmustmakehiswaytothecoretore-engagethecontainmentfieldanddelaythecore'sinevitablemeltdown. BythistimealltheCombineforceswerebeingevacuatedfromCity17andsomewerelefttopreventtheCitizensfromescapingtheblast.Asaresult,theCitadelisbarelyoccupiedcomparedtoitsearlierstate. Therearehowever,severalsoldierslefttaskedwithagoalandotherssimplytryingtoescape,andafew[[Stalkersforoperatingmachinery.TheCitadel'sinteriornowglowsorange,instarkcontrasttothecoldblueitusedtobewhenfunctional,whilebridgesarefallingapartanddebriscontinuouslyfallsfromthetopofthetower.Fromtheoutside,theCitadel'speakissurroundedbyswirlingblackandredcloudswithgreenlightningboltsemerging,debrisareconstantlybeinglaunchedfromthetop.ThepowerlinesconnectingtheCitadeltoCity17arenolongerpresent,andtheexplosionoftheDarkFusionreactorhasblownoffthetopoftheCitadel. TheclimaxofEpisodeOneiswitnessedbyGordonandAlyx,whentheCitadel'scoresufferstheinevitablemeltdownasitcollectsthecolossalamountofenergyneededtosendafinaldatatransmissionoff-worldtotherestoftheCombine,causinganimmenseDarkEnergyFlarethatdestroyedtheentireCitadelalongwiththesurroundingCity17.Dr.KleinernotesinoneofhismessagestotheResistancethatthedestructionoftheCity17CitadelhasalsocausedtheotherCitadelsacrosstheplanettoshutdown.
