Thefirststoryunderthetitle"ChibiMaruko-chan"waspublishedintheAugust1986editionoftheshōjomangamagazineRibon.Othersemi-autobiographicalstoriesbytheauthorhadappearedinRibonandRibonOriginalin1984and1985,andwereincludedinthefirst"ChibiMaruko-chan"tankōbonin1987.Theauthorfirstbeganwritingandsubmittingstripsinherfinalyearofseniorhighschool,althoughShueisha(thepublisherofRibonandRibonOriginal)didnotdecidetorunthemuntiloverayearlater.Theauthor'sintentwastowrite"essaysinmangaform";[1]manystoriesareinspiredbyincidentsfromherownlife,andsomecharactersarebasedonherfamilyandfriends.Thenostalgic,honestandthoughtfultoneofthestripledtoitsbecomingpopularamongawideraudience.
