The5DXsystemusedclassicallaminographytocreateanx-rayimage“slice”,orimageplanethatwillbedistinctfromotherimageplanesontheobjecttobeimaged.Aslicewillremoveobstructionsaboveorbelowtheplaneoffocussothatonlytheregionsofinterestremain. X-Raysystemsthatusemethodssuchaslaminography(orthenowmorecommonlyusedtomography)aremarketedas“3D”x-raysystems.X-Raysystemsthatdonotusethesemethodsandonlyproduceatransmissiveshadowimagearemarketedas“2D”systems. Classicallaminography[1]isbasedonarelativemotionofthex-raysource,thedetectorandtheobject.Thex-raysourceandthedetectoraremovedsynchronouslyincircles180degreesoutofphasewitheachotherasshowninthefigure. Anillustrationoftheimagingmethodusedforcreatinganimageslicewithlaminography. Duetothatcorrelatedmotion,thelocationoftheprojectedimagesofpointswithintheobjectmovesalso.Onlypointsfromaparticularslice,theso-calledfocalplane,willbealwaysprojectedatthesamelocationontothedetectorandthereforeimagedsharply.Objectstructuresaboveandbelowthefocalplanewillmoveastherotationoccurs.Becauseofthat,theyarenotimagedsharplyandtheywillblurtoagreybackgroundimage.Thisrequirespreciseheightdata,createdbylasermappingthesurfaceoftheboard.Thefocalplaneisapproximately.003inches(.076mm)deep. Rotationallaminographyrequiresacomplexsystemtoproducetherotatingx-raysource,rotatetheimagedetectorandmaintainsynchronizationbetweensourceanddetector. Inaddition,thelaminographysystemsrequireasystemtomapthesurfaceoftheobjecttobeimaged.Producttobeimagedisrarelyperfectlyflat.[2]The5DXsystemusedalasermappingsystemtomeasurebowandtwistsothattheeffectscouldbecompensatedforintheimagingprocess. Inthe5DXsystemtherotatingx-raysourceisproducedbyscanningahighenergyelectronbeamaroundanx-rayproducingtargetintegraltothex-raytube.Therotatingdetectorisimplementedbyrotatinganx-raysensitivescreenmechanicallyandprojectingtheimageintoahighsensitivitydigitalcamera. Asidefromtheelectro-mechanicalcomplexity,themaindisadvantagesofclassicallaminographyarethebackgroundintensitythatreducesthecontrastresolutionandthefactthatineachmeasurementonlyonesliceisimagedsharply.Allothersliceshavetobeinspectedconsecutivelybydisplacingtheobjectvertically. Classicallaminographyhasbeenreplacedbycomputedtomography(CT)orcomputedlaminographyinmoremodernautomatedx-raysystems.
