Napoleoncontainsfourcampaigns,twoofwhichfollowNapoleon'searlymilitarycareer.ThefirstcareereventistheItaliancampaignof1796,whilethesecondistheFrenchinvasionofEgyptin1798.Bothfeaturesmaller,optionalmissionsthathelpdrivethestoryforward.ThemajorFrenchcampaign,however,istheso-called"MasteryofEurope,"whichresemblestheholisticmodesofpreviousTotalWargames.Conversely,the"CampaignsoftheCoalition"allowsplayerstogovernGreatBritain,Russia,Prussia,orAustriaandattempttodefeatNapoleonicFranceinEurope.Eachmajorcampaignrequiresplayerstoobtainacertainnumberofterritories,althoughunlikeEmpire:TotalWar,onedoesnotneedtowaittilltheendofthecampaigntobedeclaredwinner.LikeinEmpire,revolutionsandrevoltscanaffectthecourseofaplayer'scampaign;FrancehoweverintheMasteryofEuropecampaignisallbutimmunetorevolution.ForthefirsttimeintheTotalWarfranchise,attritionnowplaysapartonthecampaignmap.Dependingonthelocation,armieswilllosemenduetoheatorsnow.UnlikeEmpire,thelossesanarmyhasoncampaignareautomaticallyreplenishedwheninfriendlyterritory.SomeofNapoleon'smostfamousbattlessuchastheBattleofthePyramids,Austerlitz,Borodino,andWaterlooareavailableashistoricalscenarios,separatefromthecampaign. AswithpreviousTotalWargames,battlescanbefoughtmanuallyorautoresolvedwhentwohostilearmiesornaviesmeetonthecampaignmap.ArmiesandnaviesconsistofNapoleoniceralandunitsandshipsrespectively.Onthebattlemap,theattackerwillwinifhemanagestorouttheentireenemyarmywhilethedefenderwinsifhemanagestorouttheattackerorhaveatleastoneunitremainingwhenthetimelimitrunsout.SimilarsomewhattoEmpire,landunitsarearmedwithgunpowderweaponssuchasmusketsandcannonsandmeleeweaponslikeswords,sabersandbayonets.Unitshavemoralethatwillfallifmassivecasualtiesareincurred,iftheyareflanked,thegeneraliskilledandseveralotherfactors.Onceaunit'smoraleisbroken,itwillroutandattempttoescapethebattlefield.Brokenunitsmayregainmoraleifthebalanceofpowerchanges,sotoensuretheseunitswillnotremainathreat,playersoughttochasethemdownwithlightcavalry.Infantryunitsmayengageinbothfirefightsandmelees,cavalrycangenerallyonlyfightinameleewiththeexceptionofmountedinfantryandmissilecavalrywhileartilleryunitsarebestusedtohittargetsfromafar.CreativeAssemblyalsoimplementedafeaturewhereinwhileplayingacampaign,severalnotablecommanders,includingNapoleonhimself,insteadofbeingkilledonthebattlefield,arewoundedandsentbacktothefaction'smaincapital. Anewphysicssystemhadbeenimplementedforthereal-timebattles,sothatwhencannonballshittheground,forinstance,theyleaveimpactcraters.Gunpowdersmokelingersandreducesvisibilityinprotractedengagements.MikeSimpson,CreativeAssembly'sstudiodirector,reportedthatthereareanumberofenvironmentalfactorsthataffectbattlefieldtactics:gunpowderbackfireswhenitrains,andtheelevationoflandscapeaffectstherangeofmunitions.Individualswithinaunitnowvarytoagreaterdegree,andarenolongerasgenericasinprevioustitlesintheseries.[4]Thecampaignmapisnarrowerinfocus,butmoredetailedthanEmpire'scampaignmap.TurnsinNapoleon:TotalWarrepresenttwoweeks,whileprevioustitlessportedturnsthatweretheequivalentofatleastsixmonths.Additionallythegame'sartificialintelligencesystemhadbeenmodified.[5]Therewasalsoanewuniformsystemthatincludesapproximately355non-editableuniformsthathassofarneverbeenreleased,castingadoubtofitscreation.[6] Inaddition,Napoleon:TotalWarcontainsseveralnewmultiplayerfeaturesandavoicecommandutilitytospeaktootherplayersviaSteam.UnlikepreviousTotalWartitles,thereisnowtheoptionfora"drop-in"multiplayercampaignmode:whenplayingacampaignagainstthecomputer,itispossibletoallowanotherusertojoinviaalobbyandtakecontrol.
