Napoleoncontainsfourcampaigns,twoofwhichfollowNapoleon'searlymilitarycareer.ThefirstcareereventistheItaliancampaignof1796,whilethesecondistheFrenchinvasionofEgyptin1798.Bothfeaturesmaller,optionalmissionsthathelpdrivethestoryforward.ThemajorFrenchcampaign,however,isthesocalled"TheMasteryofEurope,"whichresemblestheholisticmodesofpreviousTotalWargames.Conversely,the"CampaignsoftheCoalition"allowsplayerstogovernGreatBritain,Russia,PrussiaortheAustrianEmpireandattempttodefeatNapoleonicFranceinEurope.Eachmajorcampaignrequiresplayerstoobtainacertainnumberofterritories,althoughthelatteralsodemandsthattheFrencharedefeated.ManyofNapoleon'smajorbattlessuchasAusterlitz,Trafalgar,andWaterlooareavailableashistoricalscenarios,separatefromthecampaign. Anewphysicssystemhadbeenimplementedforthereal-timebattles,sothatwhencannonballshittheground,forinstance,theyleaveimpactcraters.Gunpowdersmokelingersandreducesvisibilityinprotractedengagements.MikeSimpson,CA'sstudiodirector,reportedthatthereareanumberofenvironmentalfactorsthataffectbattlefieldtactics:gunpowderbackfireswhenitrains,andtheelevationoflandscapeaffectstherangeofmunitions.Individualswithinaunitnowvarytoagreaterdegree,andarenolongerasgenericasinprevioustitlesintheseries.Thecampaignmapisnarrowerinfocus,butmoredetailedthanEmpire'scampaignmap.TurnsinNapoleon:TotalWarrepresenttwoweeks,whileprevioustitlessportedturnsthatweretheequivalentofatleastsixmonths.Additionallythegame'sartificialintelligencesystemhadbeenmodified. BattleofBorodino:FoughtduringtheFrenchInvasionofRussia,Napoleonfoughtabloodybattlein1812againstRussianforces.WhileitwasavictoryforNapoleon,andresultedinthecaptureofMoscow,theFrenchlostalotofmenwhichresultedintheFrenchstartingtheirwithdrawalfromRussia. BattleofDresden:Thisbattletookplacein1813duringtheWaroftheSixthCoalition,FrenchforcesofNapoleonfoughtanddefeatedtheCoalitionarmyofRussia,PrussiaandAustria.Despitehisvictoryhereagainstthenumericallysuperiorarmy,itwasthefinalmajorvictoryforNapoleonduringthiswar,asastringofdefeatsforcedhimtoabdicateandfleeFrance. BattleofFriedland:OnlyavailablewiththepurchaseoftheCoalitionBattlePackDLC,thebattletookplacein1807duringtheWaroftheFourthCoalition.Thefinalbattleofthewar,NapoleonwonagreatvictoryagainsttheRussians,takingthemoutofthewarandendingalllandoperationsagainstNapoleonfortherestofthewar,whichendedsoonafter. BattleofLigny:ThepenultimatebattleoftheentireNapoleonicWarsandfoughtin1815duringtheWaroftheSeventhCoalition,thebattlewasthefinalvictoryofNapoleon'scareer,winningatacticalvictoryagainstthePrussianarmy,buttheyultimatelysurvivedingoodorder,spellingdisasterforNapoleonwhentheyassistedtheBritishduringtheBattleofWaterloo. BattleofLodi:FoughtduringtheWaroftheFirstCoalitionin1796,NapoleonfirstmadeanameforhimselfherewhenhedefeatedanAustrianarmyinItaly.HisvictoryheremadehimconvincedthathewassuperiortoothergeneralsandfirstinspiredhimtoeventuallytryandtakeoverEurope. BattleofTrafalgar:Arguablythemostfamousnavalbattletoeveroccur,theBattleofTrafalgarwasfamousformanyreasons.Foughtin1805towardstheendoftheWaroftheThirdCoalition,HoratioNelsonwonafamousvictoryagainstacombinedFranco-Spanishfleet.Thebattlehasmanyfamouspointsandfeatsattachedtoit,includingtheBritishcaptureoftheSantissimaTrinidad,theSpanishflagshipandlargestwarshipeverbuiltintheAgeofSail,thedeathofNelsonandhisfamouspre-battlesignalof'Englandexpectsthateverymanwilldohisduty'aswellasthefoundationandconfirmationofBritishnavalsuperiorityduringthe19thcentury. BattleofWaterloo:ThefinalbattleoftheNapoleonicWars,in1815duringtheWaroftheSeventhCoalition,theBritishDukeofWellingtondefeatedtheFrencharmyofNapoleonwithhelpfromthePrussians.ItwasagreatvictoryfortheBritishandresultedinNapoleon'sfinaldefeat,abdicatingastheFrenchEmperorforgoodandusheringindecadesofrelativepeaceinEurope.Thishistoricalbattleistheonlyonetohave3differentversionstoplay,2fromtheFrenchperspectiveandonefromtheBritish.
