Gutteroilisatermusedtodescribecookingoilthathasbeenrecycledfromwasteoilcollectedfromsourcessuchasrestaurantfryers,sewerdrains,greasetraps,andslaughterhousewaste.Theoilisthenfiltered,boiled,andrefinedbeforebeingpackagedandresoldasacheaperalternativetonormalcookingoil.Usedkitchenoilcanbepurchasedforbetween859and937dollarspertonwhilethecleanedandrefinedproductcansellfor1,560perton.Hence,thereisgreateconomicincentivetoproduceandsellgutteroil. Gutteroilhasbeenshowntobeverytoxic,andcancausediarrheaandabdominalpain.Therearealsoreportsthatlong-termconsumptionoftheoilcanleadtostomachandlivercancersaswellasdevelopmentaldisabilitiesinnewbornsandchildren.Testingofsomesamplesofgutteroilhasrevealedtracesofdangerousorganicpollutantsthatarecapableofcausingcancerwithlong-termconsumption. Taiwanwasalreadyreelingfromacookingoilsafetyscandallastyear.Inthewakeofthenewestcookingoilscare,hundredsoftonsofmooncakes,pineapplecakes,bread,instantnoodlesandsteameddumplingshavebeenremovedfromshelves.AccordingtotheTaiwanFoodandDrugAdministration,morethana1000restaurants,bakeriesandfoodplantsacrosstheislandhadusedthetaintedoil. ThescandalhasseverelytarnishedtheimageofTaiwanesefoodprocessingindustry.Whathasangeredconsumersisthatcompaniesusingthetaintedcookingoilhadallegedlyreceivedtheso-calledGoodManufacturingPractice(GMP)certificate–afoodhealthandsafetymarkthatisaimedatassuringconsumersofthequalityoftheconsumableitem.Butthelabel,whichprovidesablanketcertificationtomanufacturers,hascomeundercriticism.Itsissuingbody,theTaiwanFoodGoodManufacturingPracticeDevelopmentAssociation(TFGMPDA)hasissuedapublicapology.
