AirStewardNigelOgdenwasenteringthecockpitwhentherewasaloudbangandthecabinquicklyfilledwithcondensation.Theleftwindscreenpanel,onLancaster'ssideoftheflightdeck,hadseparatedfromtheforwardfuselage.Lancasterwaspropelledoutofhisseatbytherushingairfromthedecompressionandforcedheadfirstoutoftheflightdeck.Hiskneeswerecaughtontheflightcontrolsandhisuppertorsoremainedoutsidetheaircraft,exposedtoextremewindandcold.Theautopilothaddisengaged,causingtheplanetodescendrapidly.Theflightdeckdoorwasblowninwardontothecontrolconsole,blockingthethrottlecontrolandcausingtheaircrafttogainspeedasitdescended.Papersanddebriswereblownintotheflightdeckfromthepassengercabin.OgdenrushedtograbLancaster'sbelt,whiletheothertwoairstewardssecuredlooseobjects,reassuredpassengers,andinstructedthemtoadoptbracepositionsinanticipationofanemergencylanding. Theplanewasnotequippedwithoxygenforeveryoneonboard,soAtchisonbeganarapidemergencydescenttoreachanaltitudewithsufficientairpressure.Hethenre-engagedtheautopilotandbroadcastadistresscall,buthewasunabletoheartheresponsefromairtrafficcontrolbecauseofwindnoise.Thedifficultyinestablishingtwo-waycommunicationledtoadelayininitiationofemergencyprocedures.Ogden,stillholdingontoLancaster,wasbynowdevelopingfrostbiteandexhaustion,sochiefstewardJohnHewardandairstewardSimonRogerstookoverthetaskofholdingontothecaptain.BythistimeLancasterhadshiftedseveralinchesfartheroutsideandhisheadwasrepeatedlystrikingthesideofthefuselage.ThecrewbelievedhimtobedeadbutAtchisontoldtheotherstocontinueholdingontohim,outoffearthatlettinggomightcauseLancastertostriketheleftwing,engine,orhorizontalstabiliser,potentiallycausingdamagetotheaircraft. Eventually,AtchisonwasabletoheartheclearancefromairtrafficcontroltomakeanemergencylandingatSouthamptonAirport.TheairstewardsmanagedtofreeLancaster'sanklesfromtheflightcontrolswhilestillkeepingholdofhim.At08:55localtime(07:55UTC),theaircraftlandedatSouthamptonandthepassengersdisembarkedusingboardingsteps.
